GREECE & THE GREEK ISLANDS

It takes a lifetime for someone to discover Greece, but it only takes an instant to fall in love with her.

– Henry Miller

Greece has got something like 1,400 islands. There is so much of Greece you can’t know even if you’re Greek. It’s sprinkled out all around the edge of the Aegean, all over the place. It’s already a secret place wherever you go, even if it’s somewhere huge like Athens or Corinth. The place enchanted me.

Greece and its islands have long been a favourite destination for UK holiday makers, and rightly so. For its long history is deeply entwined with the history of much of the western world.

From the Stone and Bronze age, (excavations show that the first settlement in Ancient Greece dates from the Palaeolithic era - 11,000-3,000 BC), to the classical period (6th - 4th century BC) to the twentieth century, from Plato & Socrates, to the myths of the Greek gods, we all know something about Greece.

The city-state of Athens not only became the greatest naval power of ancient Greece but also developed nearly all western culture, including philosophy, music, drama, rhetoric and even a new regime called democracy.

It is not an exageration to say that Greece and its people changed the history of the world.

Greece was also the child-hood home of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who was born on the Mon Repos estate on the island of Corfu.

From history, food, culture, its beautiful islands, beautiful beaches, wine and warm weather - even to end of October - Greece has so much to offer.
